Vidi, who just turned 27 on March 29th, is currently busy promoting his third single Definisi Bahagia from his latest album Persona. Vidi also just finished his duty as a judge for Indonesian Idol Junior in MNC TV. And now he is also working on Vadi Akbar’s – his brother, new album. And apart from the many activities, he squeezed some time in between his packed schedule to have an editorial photoshoot with BOmagz as part of our profile highlight this month.

As one of the outlets to express one’s mind, has singing been an important part of your life since you were little?

“Absolutely! My mom always told me that I’d always sing all the time since I was three years old. Even in the car, my parents didn’t listen to the radio because I always sang my heart out. Eventhough the radio was on, I’d sing all the advertising jingles. But as long as I remember, singing is always been my passion.”

So when did you decide to make a career out of it?

“Technically, my parents come from music and entertaiment industry. My mom was a piano teacher, while my dad’s bussiness was in the entertaiment industry. It’s safe to say that I was very familiar with music back then. But at first, I never intended to pursue my career in music, I actually wanted to be a doctor. Since my mom was a piano teacher, I learned how to play piano and also violin. I also took guitar and singing lesson for awhile before I stopped.”

“I self-taught singing. In the early years of my senior high school, I began to make music and create an album just for fun at first. But I received a welcoming enthusiasm that drives me to pursue it even more.”

Safe to say that musicality has been imprinted in you since way back when. But how do you maintain yourself to always feel inspired?

“From my favorite singers. As a 90s generation, that was the time when the music scene was so good, I looked up to huge bands like Dewa 19, Padi and of course, Sheila On 7. For solo singers, I adore Chrisye and Glenn Fredly’s music, and also from Kerispatih—I love their songs and I love the former vocalist, Sammy Simorangkir’s voice. On an international level, I still listen to Craig David and Jason Mraz.”

As a pop singer, have you ever thought to explore other genres?

“I never intended to focus on one genre, because I used to sing jazz. But since I entered this industry and walked on the mainstream way, people quickly labeled me as a pop singer. So whatever type of music I produced, I’d always be labeled as pop. In my latest album Persona, I didn’t follow the popular trend. It was experimental and explored the undiscovered part of me. I couldn’t be as independent as I am now when I was still in a label company. So this album is actually far from pop, but since it’s Vidi Aldiano’s album, people would still likely labeled it as pop.”

Does it annoy you though, after all the experimental hardwork that you put in the recent album, yet people would still perceive that as a pop album?

“Not at all. Because this is how I see it, my first album was an indie one and it was pop, I wasn’t as observant as I am now. And when I made my second album, my main priority was my studies, and I asked the label people to help me finish the album. And after I finished my Masters degree, I went back to an indie label with all these knowledge (from the music industry) that I had for 8 years—I applied them all in this third album. The feedbacks were really positive.”

Among the 10 songs in your latest album Persona, do you have one song that brings out all the memories?

“Among all of my albums, this one is the most special in my opinion. I chose an indie label and I named it Persona because all of the songs are based on my personal stories. The word is taken from Latin. And if I had to choose a song that best represents myself, I would say all of them.”

What is that one dream that you’ve always wanted to accomplish?

“I’ve always wanted to be a doctor. But looking at my father, I really wanted to be an entrepreneur. It’s also one of the reasons why I majored in business. I want to be my own boss. And this is what I’m having. I have my own label, management, and several businesses that I run. Other dream that I’d like to accomplish is to have a capital and well-established venture. But when it comes to singing, it’s always been my priority and I never considered this as work.”

Share us one that people hardly know about you?

“I think i’m an open book kind of person. But the first thing that people always said to me when they first met me is that I am way taller that they thought.” (Laughs)

Your current playlist?

24K Magic album from Bruno Mars! I love the whole album, the songs are great. Also, Divide by Ed Sheeran – I love it! But my current obsession is John Mayer’s new release singles. He is that crazy.”

What would you be in the next 10 years?

“Hopefully I’ll be a father, a good husband, and a successful entrepreneur. I’ll still continue my career as a singer and song-writer.”
